Tea Gardens and Trails

“ East Nepal Biking Trip if you are a mountain bike rider & nature lover your trip will be awesome !!  “ – Santosh Rai Mountain Bike Leader

This trail takes us from the heart of the tea estates up to the gateway to Kanchenjunga, down to the raging Tamur River and then up to the charming townships of Gupha Bazaar and Chainpur. The ride is a mix of trails and jeep track with single track options for good riders. Full vehicle support means we can enjoy the down hills and not suffer through the ups. Highlights of the area are the super friendly local people totally unaccustomed to tourist, stunning views of the Eastern Himalaya and experience local traditions and delicacies like Tea, Thungba, Sukuti and Nepal’s National Flower the Rhododendron.

This is an epic ride that can be tailored to suit your needs. We can make a super challenging touring style ride with big climbs and big descent, or endruo style with full vehicle support for lovers of super technical single track. We can also shorten it to just a tea gardens ride.

DAY 01 ARRIVAL IN NEPAL

Fly to Nepal arrival and transfer to Chandraban Eco Resort which is on the fringes of Shivapuri National Park. We relax and acclimatize for the afternoon, pack excess luggage and bikes for transport to Phikkle (East Nepal) The bike transport will take around 20 hours.

DAY 02 SHIVAPURI NATIONAL PARK DAY RIDE
We ride a nice loop from the resort, using HST bikes up to the Helipad (4km climb from the resort) and then down nice trails to Bouldanath Stupa, one of the biggest Stupas in Asia for lunch and sightseeing and then ride some rural single tracks  back to the Eco Resort.

We leave on the 10:30am flight to Bhadrapur from Kathmandu. The flight takes around 35mins and then we have a 1hr 45min drive to Kanyam( Phikkle). Phikkle is a tea plantation village. Here we are reunited with our bikes and enjoy a one and a half hour single track ride around the tea gardens. We can take lunch in Phikkle, good local food and culture. We then ride on steady uphill and flat along a ridge (Paved Road) to Pasupatinagar. Great views and greenery over the rolling hillsides and tea plantations. Today is a good introduction day to east Nepal.

DAY 04 LOOP RIDE – COTTAGES –ANTU DADA –GREEN TEA FACTORY -COTTAGES
First we ride to the India and Nepal Boarder, it’s about 1km uphill on pitched road. From here we turn off onto jeep track and climb to Antu Dada to the top is 25km, the first 20 km is undulating with mixed jeep track and single options and some tea gardens and as we are riding on a ridge we can see views both into India and Nepal, the area we are looking at in India is part of Darjeeling (Mirik Tea Gardens). The last 4km we climb quite steep up to Antu Dhada (Good view point). This day we will have vehicle support for those who cannot ride and we will have a simple picnic lunch at the view point. After lunch we return to the cottage via a different route. From the top we take a mix of single track and jeep track all downhill for 4km from where we join another jeep track….its again undulating, no traffic, good fun riding. Short ups and down. Our destination is the green tea factory in Boudhadham, it’s a total of 20km riding from the lunch stop, with a stiff 3km climb to reach the top. Here we can learn and taste green tea and take a good look around. From here it’s a 3km climb on paved road back to the cottage. If tired we can call in the jeep.

DAY 08 SUKETAR TO DOVAN
Today is 26km of downhill we ride all the way to the mighty Tamur River. The trail is excellent jeep track for riding with no traffic. There are some single track options that will test your skill. A really good fun day of riding. We have to cross the river on a suspension bridge to reach the camp on the banks of the Tamur River.

DAY 09 DOVAN TO SAGU
The real challenge and adventure begins. We have to leave our support vehicle behind for some time as there is no road bridge on the Tamur River. We ride uphill for around 24km on a newly made jeep track. This is a challenge of the trip. We will hire local porters who will leave early to carry our bags up to the trail head. (We can pack a bit lighter for two days and send bulk luggage in the truck).

DAY 10 SAGU TO GUPHA BAZAAR
Today 20km uphill switchbacking with a massive 1800 meter altitude gain, this is an awesome challenge for anyone who wants to take it. Your guide will arrange local transport for people who do not want it. (Our other truck will meet us again in Gupha Bazaar with the rest of our luggage).

DAY 11 GUPHA BAZAAR TO CHAINPUR
We begin the day with a rideable 2.5km uphill. The options are jeep track and single track which is a local peoples walking trail its nice but in some sections its steep, its mostly 75% rideable and enjoyable. Scenery is great.
