Langtang Valley Trekking

Discover the magic of Langtang National Park and the Unique nomadic lifestyle of the yak & cow herders who call it home.

Langtang is a beautiful region to the north of Kathmandu and situated inside the well protected Langtang National Park. The area is dense with alpine and Rhododendron Forests and rich in bird and wildlife. As the Park is protected human habitation only happens in the Buffer Zone and the main Valley. The people here are of Tibetan origin and live a simple yet sustainable life of Yak and Cow farming.

The main villages, Lantang and Kanjin Ghompa were destroyed in the 2015 earthquake with the loss of 175 lives. This amazing community has got together to rebuild the villages and their livelihoods and for the trekker it is an overwhelming experience to see this recovery.

Day 01: Arrival in Nepal

Upon your arrival in Nepal, a member of our team will meet you at the Airport and transfer you to the Hotel. We have a meet and greet with the Guide/Trekking team for a trip briefing and gear check. We also treat you to a welcome dinner of Nepal’s Traditional dish Dal Bhat (Rice, Lentil Soup and lots of Yummy side dishes).

Day 02: Kathmandu Valley Sightseeing

This morning we have breakfast with your trekking guide and go over the program and what you will need for the trip. The guide will also check your gear to make sure you have the right stuff.

After Breakfast we team up with a local cultural specialist and go on a discovery tour of the hidden sights and wonders of Kathmandu Valley. During the tour you will discover local markets, alleyways and hidden temples, taste some local food and of course visit some of the more famous sights in Kathmandu like Durbar Square, Pashupatinath and Boudhanath Stupa. The tour is a mix of walking, cycle rickshaw and driving. (Also cycling tour option if required).

Day 03: Drive to Syabrubesi (1503m) and Trekking to Khangjim (2280m). Distance 6km

The road out of Kathmandu and over to Rasuwa Region is adventurous, but continually improving. In the wet season it can take longer. Some section of the road are rugged and 4WD only but it is one of the most stunningly scenic drives in Nepal, the sheer steepness of the terrain will make you wonder how they even built a road here in the first place.

We leave early around 6am and get some tea and light breakfast at after a couple of hours of driving. The drive in total takes around 6 hours. We have lunch in Syabrubesi, delicious locally prepared Dhal Bhat (Rice, Veg Curry and Lentils). We meet the porters and then start our 3 hour hike to Khangjim. It is all uphill on a mix of steep trekking trails and local jeep track. We climb up the side of the hill that marks the start of Langtang Valley. If it’s clear we can get snow cap Views of Paldor Peak.

Khangjim, like many of the villages in Langtang, is recovering from the earthquake, most houses are now rebuilt. The village is not on the main trekking route, so it has little tourist visitation, but this is the start of the high trail into Langtang, which is by far the most pretty one. We stay overnight in a simple, yet homely guest house run by a local family. (Our guides family)

Day 04: Trekking from Khangjim (2280m) to Lama Hotel (2500m). Distance 11km

Today we bid farewell to Khangjim and climb up and out of the village for about an hour. A steady pace takes us through the forest and Rhododendrons to a clearing on the ridge. Here we can get really good views of Palador Peak and our first tantalizing glimpses up the Langtang Valley. We now walk on an exposed cliff edge track high above the Langtang River. The views are breathtaking. The trail undulates along the cliff and after a further hour reaches to Sherpa Goan nestled on the hill side. There are some steep downhill sections here and we take a tea break in Sherpa Goan. Then continue on a steady descent, climb, descent path to Rimche with views of Ganesh Himal. Here there are common sightings of Blue Sheep or Thar on the opposite hillside and the occasional Red Panda. This is the place where we rejoin the main Langtang Valley Trekking Trail. From Rimche it’s a 25 min stroll to Lama Hotel.

Lama Hotel is a lovely teahouse village next to the river, a good place to cool down your feet in the fast flowing waters and do some bird and monkey spotting (Langur Monkeys).

Day 05: Trekking from Lama Hotel (2500m) to Langtang Village (3430m). Distance 8km

We climb almost 1000m today, but you will not notice it much. The trail starts out in the thick forest with moss coated trees. If you walk slowly you can see the Himalayan Pika, Squirrels some Musk Deer and a wonderful variety of birds along the trail.

The trail starts by undulating up and down on stone stairs along the river. We pass through the secluded one house villages of Riverside and Woodlands and climb gently out of the steep sided valley. After about 2 and a half hours we pop out of the tree line and enter the wider section of Langtang Valley. Here we can stop for tea in Ghodatabela (3030m). The valley becomes more grassy and open and you can see many varieties of Rhododendron trees (Flowering in April/May). You will also notice Jhobo(Female) and Jhoba (Male) which are cow and yak crosses and know for their high yields of milk.

After a break at Ghodatabela (It means horse stable and the place used to be where the locals kept their ponies), we trek steadily across the pasture lands and then have a short but steep climb to reach Thyangsyap (3140M). From here you can see Langtang Village. It takes a further 1 hour to reach there. Before the village we have to cross a huge landslide which came down in the 2015 Earthquake and destroyed the entire village killing 157 people along with it. The entire village has now been re built. Just before the town is a Chorten and Memorial for the dead.

Have an open mind as you approach here, it is not the quintessential himalayan village with quaint houses, the entire village has been newly built and can look and feel like a construction site at times, but here you will find the most welcoming and strong spirited people of Langtang ready to welcome you into the thier new teahouses and you can be part of the legacy of rebuilding!

Day 06: Trekking from Langtang Village (2500m) to Khanjin Ghompa (3830m). Distance 7km

Along the way today be sure to look up at the cliffs on either side, it’s a good chance to see Thar (Blue Sheep) and Mountain Goats. We leave Langtang and climb up a short way to Mumdu Village, from here the trail undulates high above the river and heads closer and closer to the mountains. The scenery today is stunning. We stop along the way to rest, take tea and make sure we acclimatize well. It’s only three hours to Khanjin Ghompa where we will have lunch. Khanjin Ghompa sits in a bowl of mountains on a plateau above the Langtang River. This village is also being rebuilt, but its a fantastic place to stay.

We stay in a lovely teahouse with an attached coffee shop and bakery that makes delicious pastries. (Homemade Apple Pie is worth treating yourself).

After lunch we take a gentle walk to the hidden lake which is fed by the Liguri Glacier.Here you will be surrounded by mountains and also see the Glacier not so far away. Take it easy to allow your body time to acclimatize. The recommended food here is the local Sherpa Stew, a hearty bowl of tibetan style hand made noodles and vegetables.

Day 07: Explore Khanjin Ghompa

Khanjin Ghompa is an ideal place to stay for a day. There are many options for sightseeing. Theres is a small Ghompa here, which is one of the sacred places for Tibetan and Buddhist people. While it was destroyed in the earthquake, it has now been re built and repainted. The place was made famous by Rimoche who came here with his Ox and stayed.

Today we have the options to wake up before sunrise and climb Khanjin Ri (4773m) from where you get amazing views of Yara Peak (5500m), Langtang Ligrung (7227m) and many other peaks on the rim of the Tibetan Plateau. It’s a four hour up and down round trip, worth doing. If you are more energetic you can go on further up to Tsergo Ri (4948m) .

Lantang Base Camp (5000m) is another options, carry a packed lunch for this 5 hour round trip to the base camp of Lantang, you will be surrounded by mountains.

Glacier Visit – 3 hour round trip to visit Langtang Ligrung Glacier.

Langshisha Kharka (4284m) – This is one of the most magical places in the Valley, actually almost at the end of the Valley. It’s an eight to nine hour round trip, steady walking up the valley along the river, takes us past several glaciers (Langshisha Glacier and Sulbinachum Glacier) and to this holy place where the Rinpoches Ox died.. (In Tibetan the place names actually means death of the ox.) There are no settlements here…perhaps the occasional cow shed. We will need to carry a packed lunch for this hike. Also if needed we can arrange an overnight camp here as well. The place is at the foot of Langhisha Ri (6427m), Pemtang Karpo Ri (6855m) and Urilnmang (6151m) with the impressive Dorje Lakpa (6966m) looming in the background.

Day 08: Trekking from Khanjin Ghompa (3830m) to Rimche (2399m). Distance 13km

Leaving behind the Mountains we retrace our steps all the way back to Rimche. This tiny one teahouse town is nestled on the cliff side just above the Langtang River. We take a few side trails on the way, varying from our inbound route. There is a lovely side trail through Yak Fields and Rhododendron Forests which winds its way along the river and downwards to Woodlands.We take lunch on route at Ghodatabule.

Day 09: Trekking from Rimche (2399m) to Syabrubesi(1503m) and Drive to Nuwakot

People with knee trouble ay struggle today as we drop down on a steep loose pathway to the River. From here we go up and down in typically “Nepalie Flat” flat style on stone, dirt and mud footpaths. Some sections are very steep. But at a steady pace we can reach our destination in four hours. A nice place to stop for lunch is Bamboo.

An interesting feature to keep your eyes open for is the rare beehives made by the Giant Himalayan Honey Bees. This hives are the ones of legend spoke about by the Honey Hunters of Nepal.

We then take lunch and drive 3 and a half hours to Nuwakot Dhurba… welcome drinks await and a hearty locally prepared organic meal served by the friendly staff of this charming 100 years old traditional farmhouse.

Day 10: Relax and Explore Nuwakot

As you might arrive in the dark, you will be awake to a pleasant surprise of the lush gardens and surroundings of Nuwakot Famous Farm House. It is the perfect place to recover from your trek. Spend the day lounging around in the garden, drinking tea and hanging out with the resident Turkeys or take a hike to Nuwakot Dhurba. Nuwakot Dhurba was once a Royal Place, one of many small empires which ruled Nepal.

If you are a little more energetic take a two hour loop hike to the watchtower, a great place for final views of the Langtang and Ganesh Himalaya and plenty of bird watching opportunities. In the late afternoon it’s nice to stroll down to the village square and sit in a local Raski shop (Local rice wine) chit chat with the locals, sip some local spirits and watch the daily village life go buy.

Day 11: Drive to Kathmandu

Around mid morning we drive to Kathmandu, three hours on bumpy roads takes us back to the thriving capital city of Nepal. Check into the Hotel and take some time for last minute shopping or sightseeing.

Tonight we go our for our farewell meal in Nepal.

Day 12: Departure from Nepal

Transfer to the airport for your outbound flight.

Entry visa to Nepal can be obtained either from the relevant embassy or consulate prior to your departure or at the airport on arrival to Nepal.

Visa on arrival can be applied for via the Immigration website. Just fill in the details online and then print a copy and bring it with you. Payment is made on arrival.

ARRIVAL INFORMATION

The international airport in Kathmandu, Tribhuvan is located about 7km from the city center. Most of our package tours include an airport pick up. Other options are to get a pre paid taxi from the desk at the airport. The rates are fixed and fair.

INSURANCE

Travel Insurance that covers evacuation from above 5000m is required for this trip. The current entry rules to Nepal also require your insurance to cover Covid related issues. Personal travel insurance is compulsory for you to join this trip. You must present a copy of your policy upon arrival in Nepal. Two companies we recommend for travel insurance are World Nomads and Covermore.

FOOD/MEALS

The food on the trail is pretty good. Menu items vary for the local staple Dhal Bhart (Rice, Lentils, Veg Curry, Spicy Pickle and optional Meat Curry) to Noodles, Pasta, Rosti, Eggs and all kinds of soups and locally made flat breads, Oats and Potato dishes. Fresh Fruit is generally limited in these areas.

Vegetarians and Vegans are not a problem at all, there are multiple menu items for both requirements that are filling, nutritious and high energy. Though we do recommend you to pack nuts, dried fruit and relevant energy items. If you have any dietary requirements, please contact us before the trip.

A note on food related Illness:- Most people coming to Nepal get some form of stomach upset. But there are ways to avoid this, in most cases it is not from the food in the teahouses, here are our tips to stay healthy:-

Stay away from oily food in the mountains. Most of us are not used to lots of oily food for every meal and combined with the physical exhaustion, cold and altitude it can lead to upset stomachs. Try and choose light options like Dhal Soups, Soups, boiled and poached eggs, hearty porridge, pasta and rice (non-fired) dishes. Be careful with your hands, wash, sanitize and wash again!

DRINKING WATER

This is an important topic, the tap water in Nepal is NOT SAFE to drink and mineral water bottles are an environmental hazard and we do not like our clients to use them. HST is trying our best to eliminate the need for disposable water bottles.

Our office in Kathmandu has free water refills. You should bring along some form of water purification. HST will not be purchasing bottled water for this trip.

ACCOMMODATION

During the biking leg of the trip you will be accommodated in TEA HOUSES which are a form of mountain lodge. Standard varies from place to place, rooms are simple in some cases we get attached bathrooms, in others bathrooms are shared. Rooms are not heated, but are clean and comfortable and have the following:-

• Limited Internet and 3G is available in 70% of the areas. The signal may not always be fast but it is there.

• Power and access to charging – All teahouse have this and you can charge phone, cameras and lights. In some teahouses a small charge is applicable for this (100nrs). But the electricity is very limited. Carrying a Power Bank or spare batteries is recommended on this trip.

• Hot water is available in all teahouses, but can vary depending on sunshine (some places is solar). Hot water is not automatic so please tell the guide you need it and he will make sure the hotel provides it.

Hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara are 3 star with all facilities.

CURRENCY

The NPR – Nepalese Rupee and it comes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 Notes with 1 and 2 paisa coins. Most places in tourist areas like Kathmandu and Pokhara will accept USD, EURO, POUNDS and other major currencies.

For travel in more remote regions like Annapurna and Upper Mustang you should carry local currency in smaller denominations.

ATM’s withdrawing up to 30,000nrs at a time can be found everywhere in the tourist centers of Kathmandu and Pokhara and also there is one ATM in Jomsom and Manang. Beware the local banks charge 300nrs to 500nrs per transaction above any charges your own bank may charge you.

MONEY EXCHANGERS

Can be found all over the tourist areas and you can negotiate a little for better rates. On The street money exchangers give a much better rate than banks and hotels.

CREDIT CARDS are accepted in bigger hotels and business, the local service charge is normally 4%.


What is the risk of Altitude Sickness?

Our itinerary is set up to allow for acclimatization. As long as the riders take it steady, most people only suffer mild symptoms which are manageable. 

What Happens if I get Sick?

If you get sick, you have options that include, returning to either Pokhara or Kathmandu with a member of our support team, staying and resting in place for a day or using a support vehicle to travel to next destination. It depends on severity of sickness and options available to the group at the time. For serious illness or accident, immediate Helicopter evacuation will be undertaken. 


What level of training do the guides have?

All our guides hold the Government regulation trekking guide license as per the Law of Nepal. On top of this, as per our own company policy, Himalayan Single Track is the ONLY mountain bike company in Nepal to have international licensed mountain bike guides either through the MBLA Scheme or the MIAS Schemes. This is because to date Nepal Tourism sector does not have a safety regulation standard for mountain bike guides. On top of this all our guides have Valid wilderness first aid certification. 

Is tipping expected in Nepal?

Tipping is not compulsory but it is expected and very much appreciated. 

What sort of food is on offer in the guest houses?

Teahouses have a wide variety of simple and hearty foods like Momos, Chow Mein, Rice dishes, pasta, eggs, vegetables and curries as well as breakfast items, porridge, cereal, omelets and local breads. 

Do you cater for Vegetarian’s/Vegans and Specials Diets?

Yes we do. Options are many in Nepal. Please inform us prior to the trip so we can make sure your dietary needs are properly looked after.

Should I take Diamox?

Taking Diamox (medication for altitude) is a personal choice, though it is a good if idea you are worried about the affects of altitude. It should be taken in advance of the trip. Please consult your Doctor before taking any medications. 

Do you take pictures of the trip?

Most of our guides will take photos of the trip for you. We also have specialized photographers/Videographers you can book for the trip if you need to. (Extra Charges Apply)

What if the mountain flights don’t go?

All mountain flights are weather dependent. If the flight does not go, you will get the option to drive on the same day or fly on the following day. 

Do I need a sleeping bag?

In most cases a sleeping bag liner is sufficient. In the colder months its a good idea to bring one. Blankets will also be available at the teahouses. We will send you a packing list relevant to the trip with full details once you have booked.
