UPPER MUSTANG

The crew at Himalayan Single Track is stoked to unveil something truly special — a first-ever chance to ride deep into one of the most remote corners of the Nepal Himalayas. Upper Mustang is raw, wild, and completely unique: a desert-like highland of jagged cliffs, open plains, glacial moraines, and vast river valleys. Thanks to new access roads, we now have the keys to a hidden playground of world-class singletrack.

From the windswept Tibetan borderlands all the way down to the lush depths of the world’s deepest gorge, this is a journey along trails carved over centuries by yak caravans and nomads. These aren’t manicured park laps — they’re rugged, ancient paths that will have you hooting and hollering, with every descent revealing another layer of Mustang’s wild beauty and culture.

This is Enduro in its purest form. Sure, we’ll shuttle some climbs, but be ready for some honest grinding, hike-a-bike pushes, and sections that will demand a bit of sweat and swearing. The payoff? Long, raw descents that make every ounce of effort worth it.

Nights are spent in traditional tea houses, where we refuel on hearty local food and connect with the warmth of the Lopa people. It’s more than just a ride, it’s an immersion into a mountain culture few outsiders ever get to touch.

For the adventurous rider, this is a true bucket-list experience. Our standard itinerary is stacked with epic trails, but if you’ve got the fire, our guides will happily lead you to off-the-map gems that few, if any, have ridden before. Who knows, you might just claim first tracks on your own slice of Himalayan singletrack. This is Mustang. This is Enduro. This is one for the lifetime stories.

Itinerary

Day 01Arrival in Nepal (1,400m – Kathmandu)
Touch down in Nepal, and one of our crew will be there at the airport to welcome you. A quick transfer takes you to your hotel where you can shake off the flight. In the evening, we’ll meet up with your guide for a trip briefing, gear check, and a taste of what’s to come. To kick things off properly, we’ll head out for a welcome dinner of Nepal’s national feast:- Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, and a spread of local side dishes that’ll keep you fueled for days).
Day 02Fly to Pokhara (822m) & Ride Pokhara’s Best Enduro Trails
A short mountain flight drops us into Pokhara, framed by the mighty Annapurna peaks. From there it’s straight onto the bikes for a full day shredding Pokhara’s best enduro trails:- think jungle switchbacks, loamy descents, and grins ear to ear. After a day of laps, we wind down with a lakeside evening and another hearty Nepali dinner.
Day 03Drive to Kalopani (2,530m) or Marpha (2,670m)
We hit the road north, driving 4–5 hours up into Mustang’s rugged valleys. In the afternoon, we’ll stretch the legs and spin out with a mellow acclimatization ride around the potato fields of Alu Bhari or the serene shores of Titi Lake (2,670m). Just enough to get the lungs opened up and the legs turning at altitude.
Day 04Acclimatization Ride – Mustang Trails (Jomsom 2,743m to Jhong 3,560m)
Time to spin the legs and lock into Mustang mode. We’ll ride the iconic Jomsom Tower Trail along with some of the best local lines in the lower Mustang Valley ,the perfect mix of flow, tech, and exposure to get the lungs working at altitude. This ride isn’t just acclimatization; it’s your first real taste of the immense variety and raw beauty of Mustang. Our overnight stop is the small, authentic village of Jhong (3,560m). With its quiet alleyways, ancient monastery, and killer sunset views over the valley, it’s the perfect place to soak in the region’s deep culture and rugged atmosphere.
Day 05High Passes & Epic Descents (Jhong 3,560m to Samar 3,660m via Gyu La 4,077m)
Today we officially roll into the restricted region of Upper Mustang. From Jhong we shuttle about 50 minutes to Gyu La , then point the bikes downhill, but not before taking in the view - a 360° panorama of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, snowcapped giants rising above the desert plateau. The descent off Gyu La is the stuff dreams are made of: a steep start, then an undulating ridge line dropping over 1,000m down to Tetang (3,040m). We weave past ancient mani walls and roll into Chhuksang, where the shuttle whisks us to Samar - a quiet hillside village that feels like a step back in time.
Day 06Red Cliffs & Flow Trails (Samar 3,660m to Ghami 3,520m)
We leave Samar and pedal into Dhakmar, where the cliffs explode in shades of red and yellow. The canyon walls tower above, riddled with ancient caves carved centuries ago. It’s a surreal warm-up, capped by a shuttle that hauls us to the plateau above - a high pastureland fed by springs and bogs, framed by sandstone towers. From here the fun begins: a long, flowy singletrack to Charang (3,500m), where we stop for lunch. In the afternoon we hit the Mustang Princess Trail - a ripping descent from Mui La (4,170m) that spits us back into Charang, hooting all the way. If legs and daylight allow, we’ll lap an alternative trail too and end the day in the lush village of Ghami.
Day 07The Yak Herders’ Footsteps (Ghami 3,520m to Lo Manthang 3,840m via Chogo La 4,230m)
We shuttle 30 minutes to Morang and, for those keen, visit Lo Gekar Monastery , over 1,200 years old and one of the most sacred sites in Mustang. From there the trail points up, following an old yak herders’ path to Chogo La (4,230m). It’s a mix of pushing, pedaling, and grit - a fertile valley stream at your side, mountains closing in above. At the pass, prayer flags whip in the wind and the view explodes in every direction. The descent is pure Mustang: rocky, raw, and remote. The trail winds down through boggy plains and grassy ridges before finally delivering us into the fabled walled city of Lo Manthang (3,840m), the ancient capital of Mustang.
Day 08Touching China (Lo Manthang 3,840m – Kora La 4,592m – Chooser – Lo Manthang)
After breakfast, we shuttle 12km north to Kora La Pass (4,592m), the border with China. The landscape shifts dramatically - gone are the cliffs and canyons, replaced by rolling tundra and endless sky. Selfies at the border are a must before we drop into “Dodging the Bullets,” a 5km, 600m descent that rips straight down from the frontier. This links into the Chooser Trail - 9km of fast, flowy riding past the cave monastery of Garphu, where you can step into the tiny tunnels carved into the cliffs. By afternoon we’re back in Lo Manthang, and if time allows, we’ll explore Samjhong village on yet another sweet descent.
Day 09Nepal’s Grand Canyon (Lo Manthang 3,840m to Dhigoan 3,300m)
From Windy Pass (Lo La, 3,950m), we dive into one of the wildest trails of the trip. Starting across yak pastures, the trail suddenly tips over the edge into a dusty, sandy canyon - Mustang’s answer to the Grand Canyon. Expect loose slides, tight carves, and that feeling of being a tiny speck in an enormous desert amphitheater. We reach Dhigoan (3,300m) by crossing the river, but before settling in, we detour to Yara/Ghara to visit Luri Gompa (3,750m), a monastery tucked into the cliffs. A fun, slightly technical walking-trail descent brings us back to Dhigoan for a riverside overnight.
Day 10Hidden Trails of Dhigoan & Tange (Dhigoan 3,300m – Tange 3,240m)
Today is an adventure deep into Mustang’s wilderness. We shuttle up rough jeep tracks into the remote backcountry, dropping into singletrack that winds down to Tange (3,240m). From here we bounce back up to Dhigoan - a true frontier village that feels like the edge of the world - then ride trails spilling down from yak pastures, lakes, and nomad routes back into Tange. The scenery is stark, beautiful, and unlike anywhere else on earth.
Day 11Leaving the Wilderness (Tange 3,240m to Charang 2,850m via Paha Pass 4,218m, then drive to Muktinath 3,710m)
This is one of the hardest but most rewarding days of the trip. We shoulder our bikes for a 4–5 hour push/carry over Paha Pass (4,218m). It’s tough, no denying - steep, rocky, relentless. But once we crest, the descent makes you forget the suffering: endless singletrack carving down through Himalayan wilderness into Charang (2,850m). From there, a vehicle transfer takes us to Muktinath (3,710m), one of Nepal’s most sacred temple towns, where pilgrims gather from across the subcontinent.
Day 12Legendary Lubra Valley (Muktinath 3,710m to Thorong Phedi 4,560m)
Muktinath is spiritual ground, and we’ll take time to explore its temples before strapping in for one of Mustang’s most iconic rides: the Lubra Valley. Expect multiple laps of raw, technical singletrack , the kind of place legends are made. Once the adrenaline is spent, we shuttle high towards Thorong La, overnighting at Thorong Phedi (4,560m). It’s a bare-bones teahouse, but it’s the only staging post for tomorrow’s big one.
Day 13Humping It & Thumping It (Thorong Phedi 4,560m – Thorong La 5,416m – Manang 3,540m)
This is the high point of the trip, literally. Porters assist as we grind, push, and curse our way up to Thorong La (5,416m). It’s steep, rocky, and a battle against thin air. But the summit view is Himalayan majesty at its finest: Annapurna and Dhaulagiri towering, barren Mustang rolling behind. Then comes one of the longest continuous descents on earth. From the pass, singletrack spills down thousands of vertical meters, scree slopes, alpine switchbacks, pine forest ribbons, all the way into Manang (3,540m). It’s two to three hours of sheer, wild, technical riding. You’ll arrive spent, dusty, and grinning ear to ear.
Day 14Manang (3,540m) – Ice Lake (4,600m) – Chame (2,650m)
We drive as close as possible to the Ice Lake trailhead, then spin/push up to the stunning alpine lake at 4,600m. Blue waters mirror snow peaks, and it’s a perfect finale to our high-altitude riding. From there, it’s a massive day of descending, dropping nearly 2,000m down the valley into Chame (2,650m).
Day 15Fast & Furious to Besisahar (760m) – Riverside Party
Today we go full throttle - hammering jeep track, linking local singletrack, and dropping most of the way down to Besisahar (760m). From here, a 3-hour drive delivers us to Riverside Springs Resort, where cold beers, natural swimming pools, and Nepal’s first craft brewery (Barasinghe) await. A well-earned celebration.
Day 16Drive to Kathmandu (1,400m)
We roll 2.5 hours back into the chaos of Kathmandu. Time for a massage, some souvenir shopping, and one final night soaking in the capital’s buzz.
Day 17Departure from Nepal
After breakfast, we transfer you to the airport for your outbound flight. Bags full of dust, legs full of lactic, and a head full of Mustang memories.

Seasonal Guide

Best Time to Ride

Upper Mustang sits in the Himalayan rain shadow, making it one of the few places in Nepal that can be visited almost year-round. Spring and autumn bring clear skies, cooler temperatures, and classic riding conditions, while June to August can also be excellent because Mustang receives very little monsoon rain compared to the rest of Nepal. Winter is cold, especially at night and in higher villages, but the landscapes are quiet and dramatic for those prepared for harsher conditions.
