The Best of Enduro Mountain Biking in Kathmandu

Without a doubt, Nepal is one of the best places to come and shred some Enduro trails. Actually we believe Nepal was created for Enduro style mountain biking, we have hills … lots of them, limited road access and a bounty of natural trails which offer varied and exciting riding, plus easy access to beer at the end of a long day’s ride! Our Kathmandu Enduro trip rips the best trails during the day and haunts to best watering holes and feeding zones by night.

Himalayan Single Tracks’ specialty is finding the best trails in the chaotic maze of urban development, community forests, virgin jungles and terraced rice fields that is Kathmandu Valley, it is possible to do anything from 1 to 5 days of excellent Enduro riding here, this enduro mountain biking in Kathmandu tour custom picks the best 3 days of riding and puts them into one package.

While we do have fixed itineraries, keeping to the essence of Enduro, we like to let you decide, so email us with your time frame, skill level and how hard you want to shred and we will custom the tour for you. This is a fully supported Shuttle Trip

Itinerary

Phulchowki standing at 2762 meters is the tallest of the peaks in the Kathmandu Valley. From its base upwards you will find dense jungles of Rhododendrons and other subtropical plants. Our ride here starts with the drive to the top, we have a warm-up of jeep track before hitting the single tracks. Bamboo trail is one of the most fun trails on the route, it carves its way through the bamboo forest, this trail has great flow. From here we drive up again and follow the ridge line and tower trail all the way down to Panauti side. Panauti is a lovely old town on the convergence of three rivers, (2 real and one mystical). The culture of the town is Newar and we stay in a little known guest house (Ghost House). We can ride around the town and explore before dinner.

The drive to Nagarkot takes around an hour from Panauti. Nagarkot is a hill station on the rim of the valley. At one time it was a stand alone town that people had to pass through on the trek to Mount Everest, nowadays it’s a popular tourist destination for foreigners and locals alike. In mountain biking terms, Nagarkot is probably the best known place in the Kathmandu Valley for mountain bike trails. While it’s not a “Bike Park” it has maintained and well ridden trails across the sprawling hillside. Riding here is just fun! Spend the day shuttling up and smashing the trails on the way down. It’s such a cool place, you might even meet local riders on the trails!

The trails are a combination of slick, flowing single tracks in the jungle, rutted and rooty trails and some narrow rice field single tracks. Length and difficulty varies and you can can ride as much as you can. Some of the best trails are Eco Trail, Ranger Trail (Everybody’s favorite) Gold Trail, Ninja Trail (Sharp and Technical) and the long and steep Sanku Trail.

The Sanku Trail will be our last one of the day and from the exit of the trail we drive to the scenic little town of Chisapani on the northern edge of the Shivapuri National Park. We spend the night here.

Waking up in Chisapani on a clear weather day is magical. The views of Shishapangma, Dorje Lakpa and Ganesh Himal are surreal, the mist wanders through the valleys below and the light plays the landscape into layers of blues, purples and greens. Take a moment to soak it all in. We leave the small town of Chisapani behind and head up onto the ridge line from Borland Bhanjyang. Some of the ridge trail is rideable and some is pushable. The trail traverses through the dense old growth forest. You can lose yourself in the solitude of this place. Once above Chilanoe, the trail starts to descend to Bagdhaw, the place where the sacred Bagmati river comes out from the mountains. Nearby here lives the Hermit Monk, he lives in the solitude of the Jungle and takes care of the small temple hidden in the jungle! From here the trail flows all the way to Tarebhir, where you exit the jungle and see the valley sprawling below us. The ride ends down the Helipad Ridge line, one of the most ridden trails in the Kathmandu Valley.

The ride has a lot more pedaling than the other two days, the trails are loamy and fun to ride, some sections of uphill require pushing, but most are rideable. There are also trail options of longer pedaling sections, or steep stair descents. It’s not the easiest of days, but just being in the pristine jungle is worth it. Helipad is a fun and slightly technical ridgeline descent which takes us back into the valley. It’s a good way to end our riding.

Total Trail length is around 28km with 670m of descent and over 1000m of descent. Most of it is single track in the jungle!

We end with a visit to Bouldanath Stupa, enjoy a kora (Circuit) of this tranquil Bhuddist center before returning to Thamel or your hotel to end the tour.
