Mountain Biking Pikey Peak with Himalayan Single Track

Mountain Biking in Everest is Epic. This trip is for skilled enduro riders. The trails  can be steep, rocky and exposed. You should also have some fitness and an open attitude about having to push/carry your bike for short periods. (In some cases we can also employ the assistance of local porters). Keep in mind the trail altitude varies from 4100m to 2300m so you will feel the effects of altitude on the ups. Our program is designed to allow for as much acclimatization as possible.

Pikey Peak is a 4100 meter “hill” summit which commands stunning panoramic views of the Everest Range. We don’t call them mountains (Himal in Nepali) unless they have snow on them! The area is Solukhumbhu and it lies about 180 km North East of Kathmandu.

Not only does this trip offer by far some of the best pure enduro and downhill trails in Nepal, with the most rideability of any other area, it also offers a rare insight into the charming, industrious and friendly Sherpa people and their himalayan lifestyle as well as the chance to immerse yourself in Buddhism by visiting some monasteries.

Add to that the chance to get up close and personal with the local culture and hospitality and ride on trails traveled by few tourists, well away from the heavily trodden trails of Annapurna and Mustang. Here you stay in simple tea houses owned and managed by local people, eat local food and enjoy the warmth of the kitchen fire and conversations of people who seem to come from an era long passed.

We are working in conjunction with Ratnangi Trail center and Phaplu Mountain Bike Club to maintain the trails and make them better every year.

Note: You will be riding in a remote area. Should you have an accident or fall, the evacuation process is harder than other areas due to dense forest cover and limited road access. Riders should enjoy the trails with care and listen to the guide at all times.

Your Guide: – Your trail expert for this trip is our Co-Founder Santosh Rai, one of the pioneers of mountain biking from Pikey Peak and Phaplu or our most experienced guide Mane Tamang.

Trips Highlights

  • Summiting Pikey Peak 4042m
  • Mountain Biking Epic Forest Trails
  • Visiting Buddhist Monasteries
  • Panoramic Views of Mount Everest
  • Riding Nepals First Trail Center at Rantange

Currently Nepal has only one International Airport, Tribhuvan. Flying into here is where your adventure begins. We transfer you from the airport to our base guest house in Kathmandu. Take some time to rest and recover, fit the bikes and meet your guide for the trip. Enjoy a welcome dinner of local food.

Our riding kicks off in Nagarkot, a one hour drive from Kathmandu. Without a doubt, Nagarkot is the best place to ride Enduro Trails inside the Kathmandu Valley. The trails vary in difficulty and distance, but they are all fun and the perfect warm up for what is to come. The tour includes a full-day shuttle, for as much single-track smashing as you can handle. The trails run through the jungle and rural rice fields and villages and boast stunning views of the Himalayas on a clear day. Trail rating would be blue and black, the rider needs some decent skills to enjoy these trails. We end the day with chilled beers and sunset views in Nagarkot.

The drive to Dhap, while a bit long, is stunning! After a couple of hours of winding through the foothills, The road crosses the Sunkosi (River of Gold ) and from here the real climb begins. We drive up through the hills to Dhap. 50km of climbing, you can also get out and ride some if you dare! As we reach the Dhadha (hill top) at Dhap, the views of the Himalaya begin to open up. We stop in Dhap, have some tea and check the bikes at a friendly teahouse.

From here we pedal to Jhapre. The cycling takes us along the little used jeep tracks, on a good day there a nice mountain views to be had. We pedal through Blue Pine and Rhododendron Forests and open Yak Pastures. The road undulates up and down, with a few short sharp climbing sections. It’s a good ride for acclimatization.

9 hours
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Wake up early and check the bikes and gear before breakfast. Our bags will be carried by some locally hired porters. Once we are ready we start the ride on a dusty jeep track which climbs uphill through the dense Rhododendron Forest, we can also see many Yaks along the trail. It’s around 1000 m of climbing today, so we set an easy pace to allow for acclimatization. The ride will take us around 6 hours and we stop along the way for local food and to visit the many Mani Walls, Prayer Flags and Stupa’s. There is a flat section over the ridge to Bhulbhule. After this we leave the jeep track and ride along a trekking trail where some sections are push and carry through the forest. This part is an awesome section. Once we come out in the open again we have a final steep hike-a-bike to basecamp which could take up to 1 hour.

The teahouse we stay in is called Shangrila and is about 15 mins above base camp. Cozy and friendly with great food and fresh baked goods in the mornings.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we climb up to the top of Pikey Peak. It’s a steady 1.5 hour hike a bike with porter assistance if you need it. We leave our main bags at Basecamp for the porters to take back to Phaplu. Once on top of the peak, the views of the Everest Himalaya are incredible! Even Sir Edmund Hillary himself claimed this place to be his favorite.

Pikey Peak is named after the deity (Clan God) representing the Sherpa Clan. During the monsoon, the regional Sherpa’s come here to worship their God. Savor the moment, enjoy the views and listen to the Prayer Flags flapping in the wind.

The start of the descent is rocky and 75% rideable for good riders. It’s steep and gnarly down to Suke Pokharai which takes about 45 mins. From here we enter the jungle sections of track and have about five hours of riding through Dimse, Ghunre and Sallari before reaching Phaplu. The single track is an ancient pathway used by local people and their cattle. It is a wild and natural mix of tree roots, drops, rocks and fast flowing dirt. The last section is a 3km, 300m descent up on a Jeep track to reach Phaplu. Lunch is taken in a local teahouse on the way, but you should carry enough drinking water on this day and some snacks or power bars (chocolates). The trail ends below Phaplu and we shuttle up the last 300m.

This is a great day of riding, a lot of it is single track in the jungle and there are some steep rocky stair sections and lots of fun.

Just above Phaplu is Ratnange which has an almost unlimited number of trails in the surrounding community forest in the Ratnagi Trail Center. These trails are maintained by the local Phaplu Mountain Bike Club with funds from the cycling community. Here you can ride our custom made “Himalayan Single Track” Trail. On these 2 days, we shuttle and ride (4 to 5 hrs.) until our hearts are content, trails are all single track, tree roots, rock gardens and good flowing sections. Raatnage has a scenic view tower and yet another cool single track around community forest to Salleri bazar and Phaplu.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Drive around 40 mins to Taksindhu Dhadha (3071m) and Everest View Hotel. We begin our ride on a jeep track up the ridge which then quickly drops down onto a single track which takes us to the lovely village of Ringmu (2720m ) at the bottom of the Valley . From here we ride a stone footpath to the river and have a carry of 10 to 20 mins to get back on the jeep track which climbs upwards and turns into a single track. There are a few carry sections up to the beautiful village of Salung (2960m). From here the trail flattens and drops. It contours the cliff with breathtaking scenery all the way to Junbesi (2700m). To reach our teahouse we have to climb a short section of stairs.

Junbesi is named after the moon where you can see the local people engaged in kiwi fruit farming. It is believed to be the place where the moon (Jun) comes down below the earth to rest (Besi). It is indeed magical to see this village for the first time sitting quietly and charmingly underneath a towering cliff. Junbesi is one of the most beautiful villages in this region.

To the north there is another famous Thupten Choling Monastery situated in the lap of Numbur range whereas to the east you can see the lovely valley of Benighat and Phaplu.
